The Importance of Choral Speaking

by Ereca C. Tayros

Speaking is crucial because it is our way to communicate with someone. We can express our own thoughts and feelings to someone. Through speaking, we can share what we want to share with whomever we want to share it with. Speaking can also be formal or informal; it depends on the occasion or the person that we are talking to. With this, choral speaking plays a crucial role for children and adults. Through this, it helps them enhance their speaking skills.

Choral speaking is a type of speaking where you will be speaking as a group and you'll read it out loud and orally interpret it, but it does not require that you memorize your chosen piece, and it uses every different voice in the group. Choral speaking has a different arrangement, namely unison, where it involves expressing strong and powerful emotions. Refrain from reading lines or verses that are repeated. Sequence where two lines are cumulative responses. Antiphonal, which is a traditional form of reciting Biblical verses; and lastly, Line-A-Child, where each line of a poem is being read by a different child.

Children and young adults must know choral speaking since it helps to improve speaking skills, not just pronunciation but also their gestures, especially gestures that are appropriate to their chosen piece. It also makes them creative in the way they deliver their chosen piece. In addition to that, it will also provide the opportunity to learn a different language, and that language will help them build confidence since they will become confident saying words and expressing their emotions in front of everyone without the feeling of nervousness that maybe there is, but not just like before. Thus, choral speaking also helps students socialize with others; it is a good way to have a better connection with their peers because, again, choral speaking is to be done in groups, so in order to have a better outcome to their choral speaking, they will work as a group where everyone must agree on, especially how to make their performance creative and presentable. This is also building trust with peers. As a future teacher, and also based on what I have learned from the teacher that we interviewed, when we choose a certain piece, we should always choose the piece that is in accordance with the grade level that you are teaching so that they can comprehend it. And this topic that I could give to children and young adults is a poem written by Leslie Kimelman entitled "Two More Days Till School." This poem is quite fun, and it is also a short poem that describes the excitement of a child to go back to school. And I know everyone of us can relate to this poem because, as the poem describes, we are also excited to go back to school after our vacation.

In conclusion, children and young adults must know choral speaking, especially in today's era, since choral speaking plays a crucial role in their speaking skills. Boasting their confidence and their ability to convey their message. Soon, when I become a teacher, I will surely introduce choral speaking to my students because I know how fun it is.
